    Default job background
    Description

Postdoc position in the Vision-to-ActionLaboratory at Neuro-Electronics Research Flanders in Leuven,Belgium, (NERF, ) to study neural circuits of visualtracking.

    Description

TheVision-to-Action Laboratory (Vincent Bonin (PI), Asli Ayaz, seniorscientist) studies the neural basis of vision and navigation anddevelops approaches to investigate neural circuits in health anddisease. We focus on representations and interconnected neuralnetworks in the thalamus and the cortex, how they are generated, turned into action, and impacted by disease and injury. We tacklethese questions at the cellular neural circuit level combiningneurophysiological and behavioural recordings with circuit tracingin the mouse.

We seek a talented and creativepostdoctoral scholar to study neural circuits of vision with focuson motion processing and visuomotor behaviour in mice usingstate-of-the-art methods. The project builds on large a large arrayof functional cellular imaging and connectivity data that wereacquired in mouse cortical and thalamic visual pathways (Han et al2020). The goal is to delineate cortical and subcortical circuitsresponsible for encoding and tracking of visual objects. Theproject will involve advanced behavioral assays, patterned lightoptogenetics and large-scale recordings.

Thisposition is endowed with a high level of independence. The selectedfellow will join a close collaborating group of postdocs andstudents focused on innate and acquired visual behaviours.Postdoctoral fellows in the lab are expected to devise and leadtheir own projects and work closely with students to develop newassays and analyses, contributing with both methodological andconceptual insights. Fellows also have ample opportunities tointeract with partner labs at NERF, VIB and KU Leuven. Careeradvancement activities such as presentations at internationalscientific events, writing of funding proposals and organization ofworkshops are strongly encouraged.

    Profile

Interested candidates with aPhD (or expected PhD) in neuroscience or a relevant field with anexcellent research track record, strong technical and dataanalytical skills, and the ability to run projects are encouragedto apply. Prior experience with mice or in vivo electrophysiology, imaging or optogenetics is an advantage but not a requirement.Candidates with expertise in quantitative analysis of behaviouroptics, or data science and an interest in experimentalneuroscience are encouraged to apply.

    Weoffer

Opportunity to do cutting edge science ina supportive and collaborative team. The candidate will join thevibrant community of postdocs at NERF and VIB KU Leuven Center forBrain & Disease Research. The lab has a strongmultidisciplinary team with expertise in cortical andthalamocortical processing, large-scale and cellular resolutionoptical and electrical recordings, and is known for its open andcollegial atmosphere and the strength of its collaborativework.

State-of-the-art tools and facilities: Thelaboratory is equipped with dedicated surgical, behavioral, andviral vector facilities, multiple setups for multiphotonmicroscopy, widefield imaging, high-density electrode recordings(Neuropixels) and patterned-light optogenetics. Proximity toexciting research institutes at the heart of Europe. NERF is withinwalking distance of KU Leuven on the campus of imec, world-leaderin nanoelectronics research. Leuven is a short train ride away fromBrussels at the heart of Europe. This is a fully funded position. The position is for an initial 1-year term with the possibility ofup to 3-year reappointment assuming satisfactoryperformance.
