Job description

Definition:

Dental Assistants are licensed healthcare professionals who provide complete clinical and chair side support to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of dental services provided by dentists or hygienists during clinical or surgical procedures.

As a Dental Assistant, the following can be undertaken if the healthcare professional is appropriately trained, competent and indemnified.

Prepare and maintain the clinical environment, including the equipment.
Record patient's medical history along with vital sign and pain assessment.
Prepare, mix and handle dental materials
Provide chairside support and assistance to dentist or dental hygienist during treatment.
Maintain patient treatment records.
Prepare equipment, materials and patients for dental radiography.
Develop and process intra/extraoral dental radiographs (xray).
Educate patients on how to maintain oral health.
Ensure appropriate disposal of chemical and hazardous waste.
Provide support to other dental healthcare professionals and patients in case of a medical emergency.
Clean and sterilize instruments and hand pieces.
Ability to interpret Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
Conduct spore/biological indicator tests.
Help patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment
Perform intraoral and/or extra oral photography.
