Ivan Prithishkumar

I completed my M.B.B.S at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, India from 2000-2006, following which I did two years of service obligation in a primary healthcare centre in India. Following a passion and leading to do paediatrics I did a 3-year paediatric residency program at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, India and was awarded the degree of D.N.B. (Paediatrics) from the National Board of Examinations, Delhi. I was a clinical tutor in Paediatrics for a year, following which I was promoted to Assistant Professor of Paediatrics at Christian Medical College and Hospital from April 2012 – August 2016. From July 2013 till July 2016, I worked as an Assistant Professor of Paediatrics, in the Paediatric Hematology-Oncology sub-unit of the Department of Pediatrics at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore. Due to a keen interest to pursue further clinical training in paediatric oncology, I went on study leave to complete a 3-year super-specialist training program in Paediatric oncology at the Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, India from August 2016 – July 2019 and obtained the degree of D.M. (Doctorate in Medicine) in Paediatric Oncology. Subsequently, from August 2019 till date (2 years and 10 months) I have been continuing my clinical practice as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology sub-unit of the Department of Pediatrics of Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, India.

SKILLS GAINED IN PAEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY

I have been working in the field of pediatric oncology and haematology for about 8 years now. I have acquired the below listed skills required to be a successful and independent pediatric oncologist. I also train pediatric postgraduate resident trainees in these below listed skills.

1. Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
2. Lumbar puncture and intrathecal administration of drugs
3. Percutaneously inserted central (PIC) line placement
4. Trained in basic and advanced life support
5. Thoracocentesis and chest tube placement 
6. Planning and preparing chemotherapy schedules for children with cancer
7. Chemotherapy drug preparation and administration
8. Can independently assess, diagnose, and manage children with malignant disorders such as leukemia’s (ALL. AML, CML, MDS), lymphomas (Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma), solid tumors such as renal (Wilm’s tumour, renal cell carcinoma, rhabdoid tumour), hepatic (hepatoblastoma, embryonal sarcoma), brain (medulloblastoma, ependymoma, ATRT, glioma, etc.), bone and muscle (rhabdomyosarcoma, osteosarcoma, Ewings sarcoma, ASPS, synovial sarcoma), retinoblastoma, germ cell tumours, and benign tumours like haemangioendothelioma, etc.
9. Can independently assess, diagnose and manage children with benign hematological conditions such as anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia, hemoglobinopathies, HLH, etc.
10.  Can independently conduct bedside rounds
11.  Can work up patients for bone marrow transplantation
12.  Familiar with autologous bone marrow transplantation
13.  Counselling of children and parents after initial diagnosis and ongoing counselling during treatment
14.  Grief counselling

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

-           I take lectures/tutorials for MBBS, Nursing and other Allied Health students in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Oncology 

-           I take bedside clinics for MBBS undergraduate and post graduate pediatric residents

-           I train pediatric and pediatric surgery residents in Pediatric oncology; palliative care and pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship students 

-           In-charge of the international student exchange program of medical students from other foreign universities who visit the Pediatric Oncology Unit at CMC, Vellore
